10 Questions to Ask a Stafford Breeder
Once you know a breeder is doing the basics responsibly, ask questions that tell you what a long relationship with that breeder may actually be like.
1. What are you trying to preserve or improve with this breeding?
A thoughtful answer should be more specific than “great temperament and health.” Ask why these two dogs, now.
2. What do you consider the strengths and weaknesses of the sire and dam?
A breeder who cannot identify limitations may not be looking critically enough.
3. Can I see the actual health results?
Verify breed-relevant testing through OFA, PennHIP, laboratory certificates or other appropriate records. Ask how clear-by-parentage claims are documented.
4. What health or temperament concerns have appeared in relatives?
No pedigree is made of perfect dogs. You are looking for honesty and context, not a claim that “nothing runs in our lines.”
5. How are the puppies raised during the first weeks?
Ask about maternal care, enrichment, people, household exposure, rest, handling, training foundations and how puppies are observed as individuals.
6. How do you decide which puppy goes to which home?
Color and deposit order are easy. Matching temperament, energy and structure to a household takes more work.
7. What kind of Stafford homes tend to succeed — and which do not?
The answer tells you whether the breeder understands life with the breed beyond the show ring.
8. What does your contract require?
Ask early about registration, breeding rights, co-ownership, spay/neuter terms, showing, return-to-breeder clauses and health provisions.
9. What support do you provide after the puppy leaves?
Training problems, adolescence, health questions and life changes happen. Find out whether the breeder expects the relationship to continue.
10. What happens if I cannot keep the dog someday?
The answer should be clear before you take the puppy home.
The point of these questions is not to catch someone making a mistake. It is to find out whether their values and communication style are compatible with yours.
