About Smithy

CH Wavemaker This Charming Man RATN

Shea × Marina

Some Staffords leave their mark through achievements in the show ring or qualities passed to future generations. Others become part of a much larger story. Smithy has done both.

A handsome, substantial black-brindle male, Smithy combines sound construction, excellent dentition and a balanced, unmistakably Stafford outline. He completed his championship with multiple majors during specialty weekends, earning breed and Terrier Group recognition along the way. His success reflects the qualities we value: breed type, soundness, substance and overall balance.

A friendship built through Staffords

Smithy makes his home in Central Oregon with our dear friend and longtime breeding collaborator, Kristin Kerner. Kristin also owns Hazel, Felix’s sister, and has been deeply involved in our shared breeding efforts and decisions. Together we have co-bred litters and navigated both the fulfillment and the harder realities of preservation breeding.

Our hopes for Hazel and Felix included producing further generations. Their respective reproductive challenges brought disappointment, heartbreak and difficult decisions. Not every thoughtful breeding plan results in puppies; sometimes the lessons are in the unanswered questions and in the people who stand beside you through them. Kristin has been one of those people.

Kristin, Dancin’ Woofs and Central Oregon

Kristin brings an accomplished professional life in dogs to this friendship. She is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) and Fear Free Certified Professional (FFCP). She joined Dancin’ Woofs in 2004, earned her professional dog trainer certification in 2007, became Fear Free certified in 2018, and has owned the Bend dog-training and daycare business since 2013. Dancin’ Woofs was named Best Dog Training in Central Oregon in both 2024 and 2025.

Kristin was a major reason Central Oregon became home for Wavemaker. What began as a friendship through the breed has become a shared vision for life and work here.

From Wavemaker to Wave-M Acres

Kristin shares our goals for Wave-M Acres as a welcoming place for dogs, learning, enrichment and community. Dancin’ Woofs uses the dog yard and sniff room, and Kristin is involved in developing the Stafford Legacy Preservation Center—our effort to preserve the breed’s history, art, literature and heritage for future generations.

That continuity means a great deal to us. Our collaboration has grown from dogs and litters into a broader commitment to creating something useful and lasting.

Smithy’s continuing legacy

Smithy has produced well-made, sound puppies, but his place in the Wavemaker story is not measured solely in wins or offspring. He is part of an extended kennel family defined by thoughtful stewardship, trusted relationships and shared purpose. His life with Kristin reminds us that the best results of years in dogs are not always recorded on pedigrees or award certificates.

Caswell & Kerner’s WAVEMAKER THIS CHARMING MAN

Exceptionally sound black brindle dog who has strength, but certainly not at the expense of agility. His head is of overall proper proportions and exhibits good breed type. Muzzle is broad to house the large teeth and excellent bite. Alert ears with lovely expression. Graceful yet strong neck with nice arch blends well into well laid back shoulders. Moderate bone, deep brisket, good spring of rib, length of back and tailset. Moved with drive and purpose. Very fluid and sound. Handled exceptionally well to show off his virtues.
