About Wavemaker

Preservation breeders and photographers of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier since 2004.

Students of the Breed, First.

Wavemaker Staffords began with a fascination for one remarkable British terrier. More than two decades later, that fascination has grown into a lifetime of living with, studying, showing, training, breeding, judging, educating, and advocating for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

We remain, first and foremost, students of the breed.

We have never believed that breeding dogs, winning ribbons, or accumulating titles alone makes someone an expert. The Stafford is far too complex for that. Much of what we know has come from putting hands on dogs, watching them move, living with them into old age, studying pedigrees and health, traveling to major Stafford events, and learning from those whose experience and knowledge have helped shape our own.

Perhaps most importantly, it has come from remaining willing to reconsider what we think we know.

A preservation breeder should have convictions. But conviction should never become an excuse to stop learning.

Our mission

Our Philosophy

We believe the Staffordshire Bull Terrier deserves to be preserved for what it is, not reshaped to satisfy passing trends, personal preferences, or market demands.

Everything begins with the Breed Standard and the living, breathing dog in front of us. The Standard is our blueprint, but understanding it requires more than memorizing words. It requires an appreciation of the breed’s history, original purpose, construction, temperament, and the balance that brings those qualities together.

A Stafford should never have to choose between breed type and soundness, strength and agility, courage and stability, or beauty and function.

Balance is the work.

Our breeding program is intentionally small and selective. We do not breed to maintain an inventory of puppies, nor do we measure our success by the number of dogs carrying our kennel name.

We strive to produce sound, healthy, unexaggerated Staffords of correct breed type, with the confidence, temperament, athleticism, and character that make this breed so distinctive.

Our dogs live as members of our household and share our everyday lives. We value the relationships we establish with their families and remain committed to the dogs we produce throughout their lifetimes.

Beyond the Show Ring

Over the years, Wavemaker Staffords have earned recognition in conformation and across a wide variety of performance disciplines, including accomplishments at the national level and breed-record achievements.

We are proud of those successes, not simply for the recognition they bring, but for what they demonstrate about the versatility and capabilities of a well-bred Stafford.

The ribbons, records, and titles are part of our history. They are not the entirety of it.

Some of our greatest satisfaction comes from seeing our Staffords succeed as companions, working partners, performance athletes, and beloved family members. A dog that remains sound in body and mind, comfortable in its own skin, and deeply connected to its people represents an achievement no ribbon can fully measure.

Education, Stewardship & Preservation

Our involvement with the Stafford extends well beyond our own dogs.

Through parent-club service, judges education, mentoring, breed publications, illustrated educational materials, rescue support, canine legislative advocacy, and public education, we have worked to contribute to the breed community that has given us so much.

Our work with The Stafford Knot, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to Stafford education, preservation, and charitable support, represents another important part of that commitment.

Today, we are especially invested in preserving Stafford history through the Stafford Legacy Project — safeguarding the photographs, books, artwork, artifacts, personal accounts, and historical records that connect today’s breed to the dogs and people who came before us.

We believe preservation extends beyond genetics. It includes the knowledge, history, and collective experience that future generations will need to make thoughtful decisions about the breed.

The future makes more sense when we understand what came before it.

Recognition

Recognition & Responsibility

Wavemaker Staffords is recognized as an AKC Breeder of Merit at the Bronze level, reflecting our longstanding participation in health testing, responsible breeding practices, and AKC competition.

We value our involvement with breed clubs and the opportunities they provide for education, collaboration, and stewardship.

But recognition is meaningful only when it is supported by continued responsibility.

We believe in honest mentorship, open discussion, and sharing knowledge rather than guarding it. We are happy to celebrate the Stafford’s many virtues, but equally willing to discuss its challenges and the responsibilities that accompany ownership.

Sometimes that means helping someone discover that a Stafford is the perfect companion for their life. Sometimes it means helping them recognize that another breed might be a better fit.

The welfare of the dog must always come before the placement of a puppy.

Looking Forward

More than two decades into this journey, our enthusiasm for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has not diminished. If anything, experience has made us more appreciative of the breed’s complexity and more conscious of our responsibility to its future.

We continue to learn from the dogs themselves, from fellow breeders and exhibitors, from historians and mentors, and from the families who share their lives with Wavemaker Staffords.

We hope to leave something worthwhile behind: sound dogs, meaningful relationships, useful educational resources, preserved history, and perhaps a little more understanding of what makes a Stafford a Stafford.

There is always more to learn. That is what keeps the Stafford endlessly interesting.

Wavemaker Staffords — Preserving Type. Celebrating Versatility. Sharing Knowledge.

We are proud to hold AKC Breeders of Merit status at the Bronze level, an honour that reflects years of health testing, titling, and ethical breeding practice rather than volume. We maintain active membership in the clubs that steward this breed in Britain and North America.
