On collaboration, generosity, and growing together as breeders.
I’ve been thinking lately about how much we can accomplish when we look beyond our individual breeding programs and recognize what we have to offer one another.
It’s natural to become absorbed in our own dogs, plans, and goals. Breeding requires tremendous personal investment, and each of us develops preferences and priorities shaped by our experiences. Sometimes that can make our community feel more competitive than collaborative.
But I’ve always liked the idea that another person’s success doesn’t take anything away from my own.
Imagine each breeding program as a cup. The knowledge, dedication, and care we pour into ours doesn’t diminish what someone else has. And when we’re willing to share what we’ve learned, we may discover that everyone benefits.
A breeder’s experience navigating a difficult health issue might help someone facing the same uncertainty. A conversation about temperament, fertility, structure, or a particular pedigree could offer insight neither person had considered before. Even celebrating another breeder’s success creates opportunities for encouragement and connection.
We won’t always agree, of course. Our preferences in type and style may differ, and we may approach breeding decisions from different perspectives. I think those differences can make conversations more valuable, provided we’re willing to listen and remain open to learning.
What brings us together is our shared interest in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and our hope that the decisions we make today will benefit the dogs and breeders who come after us.
Over the years, some of my most meaningful experiences in Staffords have come through people who generously shared their knowledge, offered encouragement, or helped me see something differently. I hope I’ve been able to offer some of that in return.
There is room in this breed for many thoughtful breeding programs, different approaches, and individual accomplishments. We don’t have to agree on everything to appreciate one another’s contributions.
And perhaps the more generously we share our experiences, the more we all stand to learn.
Another breeder’s success doesn’t diminish mine, and sharing what I’ve learned doesn’t make my own work any less valuable.
There’s enough room for all of us to grow.
Always toward the light.
